Pryaniki Pairings

Completing the assembly of the Pryaniki was the beginning of my experimentation with this tea treat. From what I found about the background of the cookie, I knew it was unique depending on the combination of spices the baker chooses to use, and that they are intended to be served with coffee or tea. Lucky for me, my job at a local coffee shop allowed me to have access to different types of coffees and teas to pair with my Pryaniki.

After trying the cookies with a variety of green and black teas, I found that they were best paired with black teas, specifically anything in the Chai family. The spicy sweet flavor of the cookies matched perfectly with the flavors in the teas.

When it came to coffee, the coffees with stronger citrus or caramel notes were more complimentary of the Pryaniki.

Even after sampling more of the cookies than I care to admit, I was still ready to go back for more. The versatility of these treats lies in the variety of different flavors one can add, making each rendition of the pastry unique. It's no surprise this classic is an adored tradition for many families.
